Google, the Mountain View, CA-based search engine company, has acquired one of its suppliers: Applied Semantics. The financial terms were not disclosed.

Based in Santa Monica, CA, Applied Semantics produces software that matches online ads with content on a Web site. It reportedly has around 40 employees.

Google hopes to use Applied Semantics’ products and engineering team to strengthen its search and advertising programs.

Company spokespersons said Google would retain the Applied Semantics team in Santa Monica, and that it will open a product development center there. The firm recently opened an engineering office in New York.

The CIRCA technology used by Applied Semantics extracts information from Web sites in a way that mimics human thought. This technology is utilized in the company’s AdSense product, which helps Web publishers deliver targeted advertisements.

In a statement, Google co-founder Sergey Brin called Applied Semantics "a proven innovator in semantic text processing and online advertising."
